4 Tips for Pet Owners To Maintain HVAC Systems in Indialantic, FL
Having pets can boost your mood and even help you live longer. The downside is that they can release a lot of hair and dander, damaging your HVAC system and indoor air quality. Read on to see what you can do to maintain your HVAC system if you’re one of the many pet owners in Indialantic, FL.
Change the Filter
Changing the air filter is a step worth adding to your AC maintenance. Though filters can last in homes without pets for two to three months, homes with multiple pets may need new filters every month.
A new type of filter can help, too. Filters should have a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 12, but those with a higher MERV of 12 to 16 may help reduce allergens because they capture smaller particles. Look for one with a higher rating that is compatible with your system.
Practice Regular Grooming
It’s often easy to forget about grooming your pet, including bathing and brushing it. Cats, dogs and even rabbits release a lot of hair that clogs your filter and causes other damage. When you brush your pet, do it on a hard surface that you can easily clean.
Clean the Floors
If you have a hard floor like tile or wood, sweep it every few days to remove pet dander and hair. For homes with carpeting, vacuuming every three to four days captures hair that would otherwise affect your HVAC system.
Protect the Outdoor Unit
Most HVAC systems have an outdoor unit with a condenser that acts as a vacuum and can attract things like pet dander. If any of your pets spend time outside, build a small fence around the unit. The fence prevents allergens from reaching the condenser and protects the unit from pet urine.
As a pet owner, maintaining your HVAC system will help keep your home comfortable. It’ll also prevent unnecessary heating and air conditioning repairs. If you need more help maintaining your system and improving your indoor air quality, you can call us at Riverside Cooling Inc.
